Being Prime Minister - Rajiv Gandhi - Congress
Rajiv
Gandhi:-
Tenure:
- 31 October 1984 To 2 December 1989. 5 Years 32 Days.
PARTY:
- INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS.
Family and Political
Background:-
Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20
August 1944 in Mumbai. He was grandson of India’s first Prime Minister and son
of India’s Third Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He has made her schooling at
Doon School and went to Cambridge, London in 1961. He didn’t finish his degree
and came back to India in 1965. He took admission to Flying Club, became a
Pilot, and joined Air India as a pilot.
As
far as political background is concerned, he has no interest in politics at a
primary stage. After the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi in Plane
crash on 23 June 1980 he entered politics on 16 February 1981. He was elected from Amethi. In December 1981
he was elected as Indian Youth Congress president. He has made a major role for the success of
1982 Asian Games.
After
Indira Gandhi’s assassination, he became the Youngest Prime Minister of India
on 31 October 1984.
Work Performance:-
As
young man people of India have big expectations with him especially to young
generation of that time like me. Rajiv Gandhi has also started well with a
dream to make India a leading power of 21st Century. He played a
superb role to enter computerisation in office. He was very keen for preparing
India for the 21st century. He sought to increase investment in
modern technology. He tried well to change India with his “vision” for India. He
has a very good chance with complete majority to build India but due to his limitations
of understanding, even after not containing political problems afflicting
India, he could not do much notable.
Rajiv
Gandhi has increased government support for science, technology and associated
industries, and reduced import quotas, taxes and tariffs on technology-based
industries, especially computers, airlines, defence and telecommunications. He
also made a National Policy on Education to modernise and
expand higher education programs across India. His efforts created MTNL in 1986 and his
public call offices known as PCOs helped develop the telephone network in rural
areas. He introduced measures to significantly reduce the Licence Raj after 1990.
Miss:-
In
fact he found refuge in international entanglements commitments like sending
Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka. His office was marred by scandals and
allegations for corruption on large scale. He had received
"kick-backs" from a Swedish company manufacturing Bofors
machine-guns.
Rajiv
Gandhi had shuffled cabinet ministers many times, showing his confusion. His
Parliamentary debates were notoriously prosaic and dull. Rajiv Gandhi’s years
can describe as not having contributed in healthy way to the political life of
the nation. Even after becoming Prime Minister, he was known as New in Politics
because he has been appointed on this post within 3-4 years of being a
politician.
He
has been criticised for long on SHAH BANO CASE in which he had overruled
Supreme Court of India by passing The Muslim Women
(Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act 1986, which nullified the
Supreme Court's judgment favouring Muslim divorcee.
Sending
Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka was also a non-popular decision.
With
Big expectation even after full majority Rajiv Gandhi failed at some level. His
office itself converted in corruption and allegations. His former Finance
Minister V.P. Singh opened some secret boxes and ruined his all credential
works.
Rajiv
Gandhi was the First and Last victim of corruption. Before or After, people had
never punished any Prime Minister for just corruption.
