Sun Rise In Life - Anupam Kher
Seven and half year later of Indian freedom, on 7th March, 1955, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, Anupam Kher born in a clerk of forest department Pushkar Nath kher’s house. There were 11 members in joint family and Pushkar Nath earning was Rs. 90/- per month. He was the only member who was earning, so they were always running short of money, Anupam’s mother sold her gold ornaments to support family. Anupam’s beginning was good although his parent running short of money every time. He graduated in Shimla with History honours. Here evening started and converted in Night of his life.
By the time he was through college, he was truly bitten by the acting bug. Around then, he saw an ad for a course in Indian theatre in Chandigarh. Asking his father for the Rs 100/- needed to make the trip was out of the question. So, he stole the money from his mother's temple — and told himself he was just imitating Lord Krishna. He spent a year at Punjab University's department of theatre. He was introduced to books on acting: it was fascinating. He did plays with Balwant Gargi and Amal Allana and realised that all the theatre he had done earlier was rubbish (wasted times).
He passed out as a gold medallist (star in Night) and this gave him a direct ticket to the National School of Drama. He acted in each and every play possible — there were opportunities galore. Life was a struggle, but he was too busy to notice. When he passed out of NSD in 1978, he assumed he would do plays on a regular basis. But work didn't come easily. He had to live in the dhobi colony behind Bengali Market in Delhi and to borrow money. He got job of a lecturer in drama at the Bhartendu Drama Centre in Lucknow, But within a year, he felt that there was nothing to do there. A friend offered a position in an acting school in Bombay; he accepted and landed in Bombay on June 3, 1981.
Now in Mumbai – Dream City, he had to stay in a Chawl in a corner of a dingy room. He was struggling to get a foothold in the fiercely competitive Bollywood film industry. He had left the comforts of his home in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, northern India, determined to make it as an actor and now, after spending three years knocking on every door in Mumbai and getting exhausted by money, the country's movie capital, he was ready to accept defeat.
He had spent many days hungry; had slept on railway stations at times because he didn’t have money to pay for a hotel room.... Depressed and dejected, he wrote a long letter to his grandfather in Shimla telling him he was frustrated because he was unable to realise his dream of becoming an actor and was considering returning home.
His grandfather replied Anupam
"He told Anupam, he could not let his parents down and reminded that his parents have had to sell many pieces of family jewellery to pay fees at the acting school. Anupam had been trying hard for three years and he will surely get a breakthrough'
This reply stopped him to go back to home and called brother Raju from Shimla to support. Raju worked in a tin factory in Mumbai and earned Rs 700 a month — they survived on that.
After knocking at the door of every producer, finally he spoke to Mahesh Bhatt. Mahesh signed him on for Saaransh. It was looking like Dream Come True and ending of Night Session, but …….. Ten days before Saaransh went on the floor, I was thrown out in favour of Sanjeev Kumar. Sanjeev Kumar was also a great actor. Rajshri Films didn't want to experiment with a struggling actor. But Mahesh was matter-of-fact and said he could do some other role, in frustration, he began to cry. Mahesh called Rajshri Films and said he would make the movie only if Anupam starred in it. Finally Rajshri agreed too. Anupam Kher was sure about:-
